We’ve had a wonderful first week back at school! Students spent time getting to know one another, building connections, and learning about the routines and expectations that will help us be successful this year. We have also already started jumping into our learning, exploring new ideas and building on what we know. I’m looking forward to seeing the growth and excitement that this year will bring as we continue to learn and work together.
Special note:
We are collecting items to personalize the cover of our visual journals with all of the things we love! To help with this, please send in items such as stickers, magazine cut-outs, printed pictures of favourite things (superheroes, characters, hobbies, etc.), family photos, the first letter of your child’s name, or pictures of pets/favorite animals. All items will need to be flat so that the covers can be taped or laminated and stored easily. Please send these items to school in a Ziploc bag labeled with your child’s name. All items should be brought in by Thursday, September 11th. These personal touches will help make each student’s journal meaningful and unique. Thank you for supporting this creative project!
Phonics:
- We started our first UFLI lesson and reviewed short vowels.
- Vowels are the glue to our words, without them, we'd have NO words.
- We practiced finger spelling with words to help us hear all of the sounds.
- We worked on our first decodable (this was a very easy read for some and difficult for others). We used it to establish routine and expectations.
Class Promise:
- We read the book "I Promise" by LeBron James.
- We brainstormed how to make our classroom a great space for us the share and how to build a strong classroom community.
- All of the students came up with outstanding ideas.
- We took time to talk about what it means to make a promise and all of us signed our final agreement.
- Students have already been referring to it!
The Day You Begin:
- We read the Day You Begin by Rafael Lopez to spark conversation about feelings when starting the year.
- This book helped us talk about how we are all unique and different. Students made a bracelet which represents them.
- Our differences are what make us special and fun.
- We talked about where we come from, languages we speak, traditions we have.
- Students shared important things about themselves and their dislikes/likes. We compared these to each other.
Writing:
- Students did a two truths and a lie activity to get to know their peers.
- They wrote two things that were real about them selves and one lie.
- Then they travelled around the room sharing their work and making guesses about which idea could be the lie.
- Lots of laughter was heard during this activity.
Math:
- We jumped right into our patterning unit.
- We recapped what a pattern means (it repeats) and learning that patterns can also be increasing or decreasing.
- We made our own patterns in the classroom identified their cores.
- Students learned what an attribute is and how to identify them in patterns.
- We completed our first monthly calendar: we talked about the order of days, important events throughout the month, and answered questions using our completed calendar.
- Students completed their first class graph. They travelled the room, surveyed their peers and discovered which grade one classes they came from.
